A number of manufacturers are now testing stereoscopic "3D" products,
but there is not at present a convergence on one technology. nVidia is
using the 120Hz LCD shutter technology many crystallographers are
familiar with from "Crystaleyes." Other companies are trying LCD
monitors with passive polar or lenticular filters.

The recent announcement that DisplayPort 1.2 will incorporate support
for stereoscopid 3D in its spec is of relevance:

DisplayPort, a relatively new interconnect for displays, uses a digital
micropacket architecture which is substantially different and more
modern than the analog or digital raster architecture of VGA, DVI and
HDMI. It seems to me that it would have a distinct advantage in the
arena of stereoscopic 3D. The graphics card could ship two screens worth
of data to the monitor using the DisplayPort 1.2 spec, and leave it up
to the monitor to manage the spatial and temporal arrangement of the
pixels. In this way, support for stereo could be standardized for the
graphics card hardware and driver, and display-specific decisions could
be left to the monitor (or projector). Since the scientific
visualization markets for Linux and Mac are much smaller than the
Windows gaming market, any such standardization would be a good thing,
because driver support for several different and incompatible stereo
technologies is not realistic.

If you have any contacts at the companies experimenting in stereo 3D
graphic cards or monitors, you might bring this to their attention.
