Dear Colleague,
Both B.C. Wang and I would like to direct your attention to a meeting
that we are hosting at UGA on October 29-31, 2009. The scientific
sessions include RNA crystallography, small angle scattering, neutron
diffraction, protein complexes and more.
As the announcement below shows, the session organizers have put
together an outstanding and exciting program that we feel will be of
interest to the community. You and your students and staff are
invited to attend. Please mark your calendar.
Please forward this announcement to your colleagues who may be
interested in attending the meeting.
P.S. Registered graduate students can attend the conference for free.
Best Regards,
John & B.C.

cordially invited to join us for the 67th Annual Pittsburgh
Diffraction Conference. Program Topics RNA Crystallography, Protein
Small Angle X-ray Scattering, Diffraction Studies of Materials, Small
Molecule Neutron Diffraction, and Crystallization of Protein-Protein
Complexes. In addition, a new feature of the conference is the
Pittsburgh Diffraction Society Future Leaders Symposium, which will
highlight outstanding research carried out by graduate and
undergraduate students.

hands-on workshop on sulfur-SAD phasing organized by John Rose & Bi-
Cheng Wang on October 28th. Note the workshop is limited to 50
participants.
We look forward to seeing you in Athens!

Conference Workshop
A Practical Guide to Sulfur SAD Phasing
Organized by John Rose & Bi-Cheng Wang
October 28th (9:00 am - 5:00 pm)
Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of
Georgia
Sulfur-SAD phasing, using soft X-rays, is attractive in that the
sulfur atoms from the methionine or cysteine residues found in the
native protein can be used as phasing probes. This eliminates the
requirement for selenomethionyl labeling, which may be problematic in
eukaryotic systems, or heavy atom labeling, which is time consuming.
However, the sulfur anomalous scattering signal is small and care must
be taken to optimize all aspects of the experiment.
The hands-on workshop will focus on our (and others experience) in the
optimization of all aspects of the Sulfur-SAD experiment.
Workshop instructors
Bi-Cheng Wang, University of Georgia
John Rose, University of Georgia
John Chrzas, SER-CAT, Advanced Photon Source, Argonne
National Laboratory
Zheng-Qing Fu, SER-CAT, Advanced Photon Source, Argonne
National Laboratory
Others
The workshop fee is $50.00. However, the workshop is limited to 50
participants due to the number of workstations available.
See www.georgiacenter.uga.edu/conferences/2009/Oct/29/pittdifsoc.phtml
for registration details.

program please visit our website: (www.pittdifsoc.org/PDC_2009/index.htm)
