Dear Murpholino, Perhaps you accidentally came upon a rare server outage? Or perhaps you had a problem locally? Did you try other programs to download or investigate the problem in any other ways?
Historically and anecdotally, I've never had issues downloading XDS from the website. I normally use wget from a bash script. As John wrote there doesn't seem to be any issues now.
