I am actually working on a portable xubuntu 18 linux USB key with a part of the SBgrid distribution for teaching purposes.

I don't see the same problem with the version in the current CCP4 on standard Ubuntu 18.04.5 (not xubuntu). I do remember seeing similar issues in the past though. It used to be the case that having the package gsfonts-x11 installed made an absolute mess of things, so if you do have that please try removing it.
