In this year of the 50th anniversary of the PDB, I have heard a number of
talks and discussions where people think that the PDB format was created
in 1971 when the PDB started. That is incorrect. The initial format was
132 columns long and carried both orthogonal and fractional coordinates.
It was based on the output of the Diamond real-space refinement program
(Robert Diamond, not Diamond Light Source). The PDB format was designed
by the PDB, when it was at Brookhaven National Laboratory, in 1976 and we
had to reprocess the existing 100 or so entries. If you consult the old
PDB Newsletters on the RCSB website you can get more details.
Frances Bernstein (at the BNL PDB from 1974 - 1998)
P.S. I realize that this is a small point and probably irrelevant at this
point but there are not many people left who would remember this so I
wanted to correct the record.
