The boards you describe sound like they might be the older Apple II AppleTalk 
II boards, as pictured here:

I don't understand yet how the functionality of the AppleTalk II vs. 
Workstation Card products differ. I would blindly speculate that the AppleTalk 
II cards might have used the same AppleTalk connector box dongle that the 
earliest Macintosh computers used?
