Dear CDK users and developers, last Friday the project had a first online teleconference (using Google+ Hangout), which we plan to repeat. While the purpose of these meetings is CDK development, both developers *and* users can find interest in joining these meetings. To the developers user feedback is of utmost importance, thus providing users a platform to give feedback in a more interactive manner. At the same time, users can get more insight in how things work in the project, and are always most welcome. Particularly, because the development is often need driven.
We discussed several things, which I'll try to summarize here. One of the things we discussed is the basic workflow of how patches are converted into CDK releases, covering the review system (and why it is important and works) and the scalability problems. I am, therefore, happy that John offered to take the role of lieutenant, someone who keeps track of patches of a particular subsystem (the IO subsystem) and see to it that patches get reviewed, approved, after which a gatekeeper (Rajarshi or me) will blindly rely on his work to make sure the patch is in order. That's the idea, and I hope we will get more people in the future to take this role. Some developers may remember such a set up as 'module managers'. Regarding the patch reviewing, the current systems are a pain. Gerrit may be an option, but needs setting up somewhere. Another important thing that was discussed is the CDK wiki, and people liked to see that moved to GitHub which uses a simpler markup language and is easier to use. It was pointed out how much work the transition is, but it was also mentioned that this would help clean up the wiki content. The EBI team will explore this further. Cyrus asked about JChemPaint, and a brief history of the CDK, JChemPaint, and CDK-JChemPaint was given, referring to Ralf's recent work, and the need to reintegrate patches. Egon has a strong interest in that, and some patches by Ralf will benefit Bioclipse too. Extra hands are most welcome here. A further thing discussed was Maven. Egon expressed his requirement for modular building, to keep dependencies clear and absolute. Options to give this requirement shape in Maven may be explored but the EBI team and IdeaConsult Ltd. We agreed on having monthly meetings from now on, and I will set up a Doodle to find a good time slot. Egon -- Dr E.L.
