I am still waiting that linux-vendors are make scsi-emulation
the default for ATAPI-drives. This would be very simple and would
solve a lot of problems. 
Anyway..when you know what to do, setting up scsi-emulation is
a matter of 1 minute, without the need to compile anything!
(Just a simple entry in lilo.conf and modules.conf)

Try to write in TAO mode. Obviously you use the most recent
xcdroast version (which is good), so just click on the TAO-button.
DAO does not work on several drives yet correctly with that version
of cdrecord. (I dont know if the news alpha release of cdrecord can
handle that)
