I don't know how many there are. But although there might be just one,
every posting from such a client would then increase the number of
prefixes by one for that topic.

It does. I am filtering about 20 mailing lists with this method and
_never_ get messages delivered to the wrong box. Even if a message is
cross posted to two mailing lists, the message is delivered to the box
that belongs to the list where the message came from.
In fact the list processors do not care which string is in the 'To' or
in the 'cc' header line.

I can explain, why I do so: If you read some high traffic lists (ok,
cdwrite does not belong to that type) you cannot read every message
that is posted there. Because of that I send the message directly to
the user and to the mailing list. If this user does filter by subject
line or something similar, you are right, it is silly to get the
message twice. But if he filtered by a rule similar to that I
proposed, one of these messaged goes to the box with all mailing list
messages and the other one goes to his 'private' box. This assures he
does not miss the answer on high traffic lists.

If your mail client is only capable of filtering by standard headers
this is in fact the best solution. But if you have a smarter mail
client that can filter by any header line, filtering by a mailing list
specific header line is absolutely reliable.

Ok, so we finally have the same goal. ;-)

Robert

P.S.: As you do not like to get mails to mailing lists as a private
copy, I made an exception and sent the response directly to the
      list. ;-)
