I have tried on a Sony DVD (model 550 I think it is), and it does NOT
support CD-R discs, but it did work with one VCD I tried which was an
ACER silver CD-R (very very faint blue tint on the surface). It seems
the requirement is that the CD-R must be VERY reflective to work. Any of
the darker blue or green, or any gold disc I have tried, did not work.

I guess you either make sure to get some very reflective silver discs, or
get a DVD player that explicitly handles generic media (a 2 laser model).
