Do I need a later version of dvdrecord to use DVD-R 4x media in a LaCie Multi Drive DVD-R/RAM recorder?

Your drive's firmware says it can't write that media. Either the firmware is buggy, the firmware isn't adjusted to this particular media, or the media is faulty. Either way the error is generated by the drive and there's nothing cdrecord (or any other burning program) can do about it. Try some decent media first.
