Note that there doesn't seem to be any 1x descriptor. This probably eliminates deleting the wrong descriptor somehow. Is it possible that your disk simply can't provide data any faster and that you're getting a bunch of underruns? For example, if you were burning a backup of a lot of little files, with lots of directory accesses, you might get an underrun due to all the seeks. If you combine mkisofs and write, the usual practice, this can happen.
Can you try creating the ISO image first and then burning? Or ar you already doing that?
Does anyone have any idea how to get the thing writing at 8x ?
