This is really strange.

It is even stranger that a locally build binary behaves different.

Implementing/testing a new idea does not mean that it works on al l platforms 
as expected. In special if this is a workaround for a preoblem from a 
badly planned kernel interface.

It would be possible to disable /dev/hd* scanning (by default) for pre-2.6 
systems.
