This is clearly an error message from growisofs whereas the -dir-mode and -file-mode arguments go to mkisofs and only influence the format of the data stream but not its writing to DVD. Aren't there any further error messages ? Are you sure that -dir-mode and -file-mode are the decisive trigger ? Did you test without ? Did you test with a disk file as target instead of a DVD ?
