Thanks. You are right, I discovered this in kernel dmesg:

[ 1.760342] ata2.00: WARNING: ATAPI DMA disabled for reliability issues. It can be enabled [ 1.760344] ata2.00: WARNING: via pata_ali.atapi_dma modparam or corresponding sysfs node.

but why DMA is not reliable is really off topic to this list. I'll ask elsewhere.
