Hello ,

Welcome to the March edition of the Hypnosense Newsletters! As usual, there's some news and some techniques - and even if you're not a therapist, you might well find the technique part of this newsletter interesting and useful.

News
My new book, 7 Ways and 7 Days to Banish Your Anxiety, is now available in Kindle format from Amazon at the very silly price of only £7.20. It's only been out one week but already has a great review. Check it out here: MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from "www.terencewatts.com" claiming to be http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ways-Days-Banish-Anxiety-ebook/dp/B007A2N710/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Although it's written as a self-help book, there's a great deal in it that is suitable for therapists, since it has a structured approach to creating a permanent 'fix' for all forms of anxiety. A lot of the exercises in it are so simple you might think they can't do anything... but they can. And they do!

There will be a physical copy available eventually but even if you haven't got a Kindle you can read the electronic version by downloading the free Kindle App from Amazon - it lets you read Kindle books on your laptop, Mac or iPad. Definitely worth a look!

The simplest ever personality test
If you've read my 'Warriors, Settlers & Nomads' (WSN) book, you'll already know how much insight a few well-placed questions can give to the 'way of being' of anybody you meet. Now here's a single question that just has to be the easiest ever personality test: "Where do you 'live' in your body?" There are only three answers to take note of:

(1) Head
(2) Heart or torso
(3) Any other answer, including 'I don't know what you mean.'

Now, the answers won't always prove to be accurate but you will be surpised how often they are!

Where you get (1), this individual is likely to be self-contained, control-orientated, practically minded, ordered, sensible, firm, with a tendency towards irritation. They frequently are somewhat unresponsive and/or unemotional and they might actually be unwilling to answer the question!

If it's a (2) this is one of the world's 'people people', often easy-going, kind, adaptable, tending to lack confidence, wants to see the best in people, highly intuitive and responsive to others. They might be anxious to know why you are asking the question and what it says about them.

A (3) person will usually be a bit of a livewire, one who enjoys life and fun, possibly even outrageously so. Prone to exaggerrate, likes drama, might have a tendency to be a 'show off', often irresponsible, and can be great fun but sometimes exhausting! They will not infrequently deny that the assessment is accurate.

From a therapist's point of view (1) people (Warriors in the 'WSN' concept) need to be treated carefully. They have usually inherited a need to be in control of their surroundings and don't do too well with relaxation techniques. Something to occupy their thought processes will be much better - and oddly, they will then relax! Being eminently sensible with this individual pays great dividends.

With (2) people (Settlers), there is a great need to feel that they are liked so they need a reassuring response from you. If you seem not to be responding while they are talking with you, they will start to believe that they are being boring and then you won't get another word out of them! Smiles and nods work wonders with this type of personality.

Finally, the (3) individuals (Nomads) are the most difficult to pin down, mainly because they have a short attention span and lively thought processes. They are not keen on factual or 'dry' conversation and will often make a joke about quite serious issues. When you're working with this type of individual, be inspiring!

This is only the briefest of overviews of this type of work and in my school I teach advanced courses on the subject that my students use to great effect. The 'Warriors, Setlters & Nomads' concept can, in fact, be used as a modern and fun style of 'Parts' work, often gaining excellent results in only a single session. If you want to find out more, there is a lot of information on my website, under the 'Therapists Resource' tab. (Or, of course, you could always buy the book...)

Incidentally, the 'Banish Your Anxiety' book has a slightly modified version of the concept, designed specially for use with anxiety. Here, the personality types are redefined and 'labelled' as Rulers, Builders and Adventurers and are used as 'Parts' to effect a 'repair process'.

That's almost it for this time, but I'll leave you with this observation from Groucho Marx: "Time flies like an arrow - fruit flies like a banana!"

See you next time!
