No direct progress.
There's been talk about upgrading our current toolset to a higher level
of gcc. That would probably help getting gcj to work too.
An experimental port of a new compiler chain was accomplished but
there's been no recent movement on it that I know of. You might want to
try it and just plug in gcj on top of it.
