St. Maccarthen, Bishop of Clogher
(MacCartin, Aid, Aed)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Died March 24, 506. Saint MacCartin, one of the earliest disciples of
Saint Patrick, is said to have been born into the noble
Irish family of the Arads. In Gaelic his name was Aedh Mac Carthin,
derived from carthann meaning "kindness." St. MacCarthen at one time
had the peaceful function to carry the aged Saint Patrick on his back
across fords and other difficult places, on their missionary journeys.
Patrick consecrated him bishop of Clogher in 454 AD, of which diocese
MacCartin is the patron (Husenbeth).
