Hi Mon (Franco), If all politicians are liars, then why bother to vote? You might as well stay home on Election Day and binge-watch Downton Abbey. Or Mad Men.
The Filipinos believe that all politicians are liars and will only enrich themselves once they are in office. So what do Filipinos do? They auction their votes to the highest bidder. They're all the same anyway - snakes and thieves! You see, it's impossible to have a functioning democracy if people believe that all politicians are liars and crooks. What you would have is a country like the Philippines, where convicted plunderers like Estrada and would-be plunderers like Binay continue to win elections. Ultimately, the solution is that a dictator will take over the country. Hopefully that dictator will not be like Marcos the kleptocrat, but someone like Lee Kwan Yew. Or even Castro of Cuba or Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam, but without the communist ideology. I prefer to think that not all politicians are liars. My observation of the political scene over 48 years in the U.S. leads me to think that there are statesmen and women in both the Republican Party and the Democratic Party - but mostly in the Democratic Party - that I am comfortable voting for. Hillary and Sanders - I would take either one of them against any current Republican. Are Hillary and Sanders saints? Of course not. We are not electing a saint. We are electing a president who must live in the real - not the ideal - world. Every American president must negotiate with the opposing party to get things done. In the process they often have to go back on their word because the other side insists on it in order for legislation to make it through Congress. That is the essence of negotiation. As long as people like Hillary and Sanders do not bargain away core principles, I would say that their performance, even with flip-flopping, is acceptable to me. I posted my response to one of the ultra right-wing fanatics in my egroups - Ben Pinocchio Rivera - to draw in people like you into the conversation. I appreciate all the posts that you make because I learn so much from them. But our interests should not be confined to determining which aspirins are the best products on the market, or what foods and drinks we should consume, or what funnies will make us laugh before our morning decaffeinated coffee or tea. As members of the privileged and supremely educated few in the Filipino-American diaspora, we should - if we have sufficient information - contribute to the political and economic conversations going on in the Internet. If we leave such discussions to the uninformed, we end up allowing people like Binay and Estrada (father and son) and Enrile to continue to plunder the Philippine treasury, and for congenitals like Trump and Cruz to triumph in America.
