That is the easiest way for the initrd to be rebuilt .. which is what created the unbootable issue in the first place. At least is some circumstances. You can also regenerate your initrd manually after installing the shim. This is IF you are already in a failed boot condition from the bad install on Friday. If you are doing the upgrade/install now from a bootable system, all you need to do is a normal update.
