Did you get the latest drivers for your gfx-card from Nvidia? FWIW, I have a same-rezed monitor as you do, and it works for me, both with CentOS and RHEL3, but I had to download and install the newest proprietary drivers from Nvidia to get that [weird] resolution working. HTH.
