Not sure what you are trying to do (delete or rename or...), but try "while 
read" instead of for (especially since the cmdline is limited)...
Example:

cat "$FILENAME" | while read OLD
  do
    NEW=$(echo "$OLD" | sed 's/\*/\-/')
    mv -i "$OLD" "$NEW"
  done
