Thanks for reply. I checked in my machine:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ grep CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RBD /boot/config-3.8.0-19-generic
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RBD=m

It is not a custom kernel. It is an AWS instance.
