I'm glad you've suggested this only as a last resort. We got Yummy from the
pound already declawed, so we felt it in her best interest to have our
second cat, Claire, declawed only for Yummy's safety in case they didn't get
along (Claire is 5 lbs heavier than Yummy too). Turns out the procedure is
actually an amputation of the last digit of each "finger" (ouch!), and I
hated having to do it. Poor cat limped around for weeks afterwards. I'm
still feeling guilty for having done that :-( so now I spoil them even more
than usual out of pity. Probably hurt me more than them in the long run, but
still....

Cat nip does the trick (or should I say "trip") for Yummy, who is now a
junkie, but Claire ignores it. Built a cat "tree" out of wood and other
supplies from Lowes, and lined the posts with sisal rope for scratching.
