I don't think it's just a matter of knowing PHP or Perl or whatever.
Increasingly web programmers are differentiating themselves from the crowd
by showing that they ARE indeed programmers and not just glorified web
designers (although web design is indeed an important skill to know).
I think the people who will be successful in a tight job market are those
who can write GOOD code in a language/platform that supports OO methodology
like Java and .NET. Understanding database design and best database
practices is pretty valuable as well. My last couple of job interviews have
focused less on the languages I know and more on whether or not I knew how
to approach solving a problem.
