Shades of Naked Ape.
It's discouraging but not surprising. I encounter books of cultural
misinformation all the time. I remember when I was studying various martial
arts, the gross generalizations and repetition of misinformation was
overwhelming. I still read books and hear people reciting things that are
blatantly made up but accepted "knowledge".
