is bigger and more is shot on location than in sound stages which means
location scouting and such. All of HBOs shows (Six Feet Under,
Carnivale) are like this but I'm guessing that maybe the actors have
other jobs to fulfuill as well which causes a delay. I know the delay of
the 4th season was caused by a major re-write because Paulie Walnuts
(Tony Sirico) was out with back troble and the writers also wanted to
work some of the 9/11 backlash into the story. The 3rd season had to
re-done as well because the actress who played Liva passed away. The 3rd
season was supposed to have Tony trying to make nice with his mother and
gain her trust back. This year you had Gandolfini in a battle with HBO
over money. That squabble ate into the shooting schedule of the current
season.
Many of the actors on Sopranos are active in theater and various other
things so it makes shooting schedules troublesome at times.

Why does it take HBO a year to do a 13 episode season? I know most of
the shows are an hour with no commercials but it just seems to take
forever to get to the next season. Regular network tv shows don't seem
like they take as long to do and they do something like 22 episodes in
a season. Maybe it's just because they stretch out the season. I think
it was over a year between this past season and the season before for
Curb your enthusiasm.

usual 13
They were going to end this season but Chase and HBO decided to extend
it a bit.
