Reagan's presidency was an important watershed in American politics. That he
was elected, let alone re-elected, represented a triumph of image over
substance and a definitive retreat into fantasy.

He was the first figurehead president. The man himself was an amiable dunce,
appealing and in many ways admirable in that he really believed the values
he projected.

Those same values were in fact horribly perverted while he was in power, but
nonetheless. He *did* revitalize the country in some ways, dare I say it. He
reintroduced the concept of personal responsibility, and that was a good
thing. What the government did with that concept while he was in power is
another matter, and that in my view was his fatal flaw. Grandiose concepts,
terrible execution.
