so what do non-religious people get married for? The financial benefit?
Of course, and also the fact that you are not legally considered married
unless you have been state-sanctoned. i.e. marraige license issued, ceremony
witnessed, and documents recorded with the county clerk.
This is to "officially" record your union in order to be eligble for the civil
benefits. Taxes, legal standing, inheritance, joint property, and all the other
stuff that hs been mentioned.
Who actully performs the ceremony is not at issue, it is the civil rights that
are at issue.
I personally have no problem if one or more religious bodies do or do not
recognize it as valid, what is in question is to have the state recognize it. A
marriage performed by a religious body without the license or state sanction, is
not recognized by civil authorities as well.
