Actually there are a number of approaches to the spam problem.

If you are still willing to download the spew and then deal with it after your
bandwidth has already been used, then probably the most popular is ASSP or Spam
Assassin, which will help classify the junk mail on your desktop.  This type of
solution requires considerable attention to tweaking and configuration as well.

Increasing in popularity, for those that have their own domain names, is a very
low cost outsource provider wherein your email is sent to a spam filtering
provider, scrubbed for virus mails, and then only the clean mail is forwarded to
your server.  That provider will readily whitelist email addresses in case of
the very rare false positive.  This method saves you diskspace, bandwidth and
aggravation in having to waste time dealing with the flood of spam that is
continually on the rise.

I know this has been discussed on here before, but I've lost all of those
E-mails.  Anyone have any reccomendations for a good spam filter, other than
mailwasher?  Mailwasher used to be ok, but now it's getting annoying.
