I worry about safety after a long day followed by that commute home. (Having done it from Mystic, CT to Boston for a few months before moving up here)

It really all depends on your motivators. For me, I love being
challenged, working in an environment where I can try new cool stuff,
and a job that makes me think/learn. Jobs where I'd be forced to use
CF5 or other old technologies make my brain rot and are hardly ever a
consideration. Continuing to use old technologies can also make your
career options rot.
The very first and last thing I'd consider would be money. By first,
I mean only consider jobs that will pay your bills, but don't rank
them by the exact dollar amount, just true/false - does this job pay
my bills? By last, I mean that only after all other considerations
have been taken into account should you go back to money as a ranking
criteria for a job.
Ok, maybe it's not that simple, but I would typically choose an
interesting gig over a well paying gig.
