I second Thunderbird.  I'm using version .6 right now, and I'd
unscientifically say it correctly identifies more than 95% of
spam/viruses and kills them.  There are a very few mis-marked legitimate
emails, but Tbird is good at remembering what you mark as legit, and
does a good job of adapting to the types of mail you receive.
