Hmm, the gif pipe is also a way I could go, but I am now wondering if CF can't handle this simple calculation without having to use JS at all.

Sure - but not on the same page. But you can definitely pass a JS variable
to a CF page, have some work done, then get a response back for JS to use
(all without refreshing the page).
