That's the thing. A society is based on certain shared ideals. Some people don't believe in income tax, some don't believe in property, and some believe in various sexual practices. The point is that these voters are saying that they, as a majority, do not find these practices acceptable in society. When you think of it as a religious ideal, you get upset because it's a religion being forced onto you. If you think of it in terms of social acceptability, you see it in a different light. Homosexuality is socially unacceptable to a lot of people. It may be acceptable in parts of NY or CA, but not in most of middle America. Society has to work on rules.
