I think it's all that more serious when Mr. Powell is on his way to the Middle East and we have military troops the top 3 Muslim holy places. Both the Palestinian/Israeli and Iraq crises are hanging in the balance and we have a lame duck Secretary going to negotiate. Thats' not to mention that whoever the new appointee is will have to start from scratch; not only building up his/her staff, but in establishing relationships with world leaders. This President has shown that war, rather than diplomacy, is his policy choice and so the real power lies with the Secretary of Defense who is essentially picked by VP Cheney. Whoever is chosen as the next Secretary of State will show whether we're about to head off the deep end, war wise. Most likely the SecDef will need VP unofficial approval.
