Well, the British landed before the treaty was signed, and the battle is
still considered part of the war as news of the treaty didn't make it back
till long after.

Didn't that happen after the treaty was signed? So technically it
cannot be included in the War of 1812. Moreover it was peripheral to
the main conflict and war aims of the US - conquest of the remaining
British North American colonies. If you read some of the writings of
the war hawks at the times, the similarities to what Rumsfled and
others said about the Iraqi people is rather striking. Same sort of
reaction as well.
