Oh I totally agree with you as well. There is no attacking nor in
my opinion anyone more right than the other in the proper usage.

I think it comes down to personal opinion and desires on how
the two individuals wish to be referred as.

I also agree that regardless on the usage, partner, girlfriend,
boyfriend, whichever, someone may still attempt to find out more
As to why one was called such.

Such as:

ME: "She is my girlfriend"
SOMEONE ELSE: "Oh, how long have you been dating"

ME: "She is my partner"
SOMEONE ELSE: "Oh, partner in business, or exclusive type relationship
or something"

ME: "She is my friend"
SOMEONE ELSE: "Oh, so you two are not dating?"

So depends on if you really want to avoid the various of questions
That could follow.

FWIW, I was curious as well. Like Tony said, 'partner' does (to me, at
least) have connotations of same-sex partnerships. Altho I've noticed a
few people on the list who use it to mean husband/wife (in heterosexual
relationships).

I didn't mean any offense in my curiousity as to your (or anybody
else's) use of the term, and I'm pretty sure Michael didn't either (he
only asked what I wondering).

Most of my family and friends refer to their significant others as
boyfriend/girlfriend/hustband/wife. So I think it's only somewhat
natural to be curious when one encounters a situation that's different.

Doesn't mean anybody was judging or attacking or worrying about your use
of the term. Was nothing more than curiousity plain and simple.
