I don't remember reading anything about Cruise even being in the running. I don't think the producers shopped him for Best Actor this year... I could be wrong. Generally the rationale given is, what does this person in this role have the best chance of winning? Given that there was good buzz for "Ray" going into the final selections, the producers of Collateral decided to hedge bets and put Foxx in for Best Supporting... seems to have worked. Unfortunately I think that Foxx being nominated in two categories actually hurts his chances. But I guess we'll see. He's got my vote for both! What I'd like to see sometime is one actor nominated for best actor for two different roles in the same year. That would be cool.
