So you win $1.4 million. You get about $700,000 after taxes. You buy an average home $350,000 (average track home in Northern California) now you have $350,000. A car for you and one for the spouse, a nice vacation, your down to $250,000. Pay off the $20,000 in consumer debt and student loans your down to $230,000. And you've yet to buy anything for mom, help out cousin slacker, etc... Hardly enough to never work again unless you're one frugal SOB. It does make a nice retirement and vacation fund for the rest of your life but not much else.

Getting it all at once is an impressive thing, but it is really not that much money. If one earns a very modest, middle class $50k a year, one will earn, and mostly likely spend, $1,000,000 in twenty years.
