Perhaps, although it is perfectly legal and part of the accepted practice of
the industry. But that is beside the point. The question he needs to ask is
whether it will affect his earning potential in future tournaments. If it
will, he needs to make a judgement about whether the tradeoff in earning
potential is worth sticking to his stance on the tips.

Then again, maybe he'll build a certain cult status for himself in the poker
world. I have a feeling if he stays in it for the long haul he will become
known as "The Cheapskate", or some other nickname indicative of other
people's attitudes about his stance. Might be an opening to make himself
into a pitchman for all sorts of discount services and brands. He should
talk to the people at Cheaptickets.com. Imagine the pitch, "I play for high
stakes in my profession, but when I travel to tournaments, I don't want to
waste my money on overpriced air fare. That's why I use Cheaptickets.com."
