My father is running into an issue on his recently-purchased house where the
wallpaper was directly affixed to bare wallboard.

It won't come off. The paper of the wallboard and the paper of the wallpaper
are now one and the same.

He tried to paint over it, but the dark flowers and ducks could still be seen
(even after 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint.

I suggested he try dark grey primer followed by white primer, which worked, but
he has one wall which now has wallpaper covered by 2 coats of primer, 2 coasts
of paint, 2 coats of primer and one coat of pain.

I can just hear the howl of anguish the NEXT home owner will let out when he
discovers that architectural gift.

I hadn't considered insulation. I was just thinking, "I've knocked
walls down, and I've put walls up." And, of course, that the knocking
down bit is a hell of a lot of fun. :-)

Also hadn't considered trim. For the first time in my life, I'm living
somewhere that's got more than just some basic baseboard, so I can
imagine how fancy trim could quickly become a problem.
