As mentioned before, I usually grow hot and mild peppers in small terra cotta 
pots hanging over the railing of a deck. 6" pots are good.

I've found that peppers thrive on difficult conditions. Root bound and crying 
for water in direct sun will produce smaller, hotter peppers (if that is what 
you want.) 

Definitely get your seeds from a reputable seed house, rather than Stop and 
Shop or Home Depot.

And plant a lot. Nothing worse than running out of fresh hot peppers while 
grilling in the summer!
