One of the brightest guys I know -- who got a GED early to accept a
scholarship to a college in Rome where he got his Bachelors in English
-- had really lousy hand-writing... coordination of the hand, or even
wrote memorization of spelling really doesn't have anything to do with
a person's ability to read and comprehend. Frequently people will
recognize a written word without stopping to analyze the spelling --
then later turn around and mis-spell it repeatedly, because it wasn't
really necessary for them to know that the word "carefull" doesn't
have two L's - they read it as having the same meaning when it's
written either way. My friend came back from Rome, had a job at a
book-store briefly and then was unemployed for a long time due to a
combination of depression, lack of motivation and simple lack of
ability to sell himself in interviews. All of which are problems I
struggle with periodically for one reason or another. Which also goes
toward debunking the idea that a college degree makes you a valuable
and productive employee or guarantees you better jobs.
