The PS/2 downward compatibility earned Sony a lot of PR points IMHO.  Would 
most people at this point play a PS/1 game on a PS/2?  Probably not but when 
PS/2 came out it was a big plus.

If I ever get a copy of the original Silent Hill then I'd be happy about the 
PS/1 capability :)
