Well I'm no expert, but I've heard from personal trainers at what's
supposed to be one of the best health clubs in the world (
http://www.holmesplace.com/ ) that the "no pain, no gain" was proven
false in the 1960s by people like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The trainers were fitness nuts: one was a body builder and one a
triathlete, but I dunno. The clubs are super cool and the one in
Chicago has a stainless steel invisible edge bromine pool. When
you're swimming in it you can see the Hancock tower! It's pretty
cool, so even if the trainers are full of it, the pool is cool.

I work out almost every day and have been seeing steady improvements
for years and I rarely have soreness (except at the limits of
extension). I use freeweights ( Hoist half cage 985A
http://www.hoistfitness.com/home.html ), but I have far from perfect
form!

In the end, I dunno, but I've been told that by lots of people - many
of them pros and I've never heard a pro disagree with that.
