I group my images by date as well, but I have broken the galleries
down into some large piles, which each have date folders under them.

What do you not like about the EXIF and IPTC metadata? I just spent
this weekend getting CF to talk to java to read the metadata for this
filetype, and I like the speed and simplicity of this data.

But for filetype without extensible metadata, I typically create a
..nfo file in the same folder named the same as the binary file that
contains an xml structure of metadata, and have taught verity to
understand this metadata and filetype for searching. This often
includes data such as captions for the gallery apps.
