It served it purpose well, getting satellites into precision orbit, being able 
to repair them in space and trucking parts to the ISS. 

The problem is that the tech is getting old, and there's no immediate 
replacement. We'll need a whole new breed of workhorse to move equipment and 
manpower to build moon colonies and beyond.

I agree!  I just think the shuttle does squat to further that goal.

We should work towards a base on the moon similar to the ones on
Antarctica.  They should have telescopes, etc and we should be looking
for ways to develop technology that allow humans to easily survive in
those conditions.

I don't see how the shuttle does anything for anything.
