I met him in person when I was in the first grade in Highland Park, IL. We took a field trip to Ebony Magazine headquarters in Chicago and he came down to meet us and sign autographed copies of that month's issue. I remember him being very tall, and he had the warmest smile. Ebony Magazine used to have some very thick issues -- especially the Christmas issue. It was on par with Look and Life magazines in quality (the cover styles even looked the same).
