Well, the fact that EA also inked exclusivity deals with NASCAR, FIFA
and PGA doesn't completely absolve them from blame. I'm admittedly not
as up on the competition for NASCAR and PGA games, but the FIFA lock
will certainly keep Konami from pursuing a FIFA license for its Winning
Eleven franchise, which is far superior to EA's FIFA label. Of course,
Konami's been at the top of the soccer game and eating EA's lunch for a
while now without a FIFA license anyway, and EA throwing money around
isn't going to improve anything.

I suppose, more than anything, it's interesting to see the mindset
behind the sports leagues locking down a single company for game
licensing. Having multiple companies with NFL/NFLPA rights just seems
like a better revenue decision over the long run than having a single
payout. The NFL (etc.) worries about "quality for fans", but never in
all my years of gaming have I ever seen a single person decide that they
hated professional football because they made the mistake of playing a
989 Studios release. I think the NFL is underestimating the capability
of its fans to be objective about the difference between determining if
Madden or NFL2K is a better buy and making the distinction between a
pixellated player whos stats and capabilities are far overrated and, you
know, the real Jeremy Shockey.
