There was this place (an information broker!!!) where I asked about the
database and they pointed to a directory with several thousand Word documents
...

Luckily I didn't take the first plane home, because in the end it wasn't bad at
all. The new database was about 60 tables, I did a fresh import off all the
utility tables (country codes, currency signs etc.), they hired a temp to
import a few hundred old files they needed for that months editions and the
rest was added on the fly. The turnover of the information was about 4 months
so they just started entering the new information in the database and in 4
months the switch was complete.
